Dairy cattle when housed for winter, or indeed in some cases, all year round can be prone to a disease called digital dermatitis. This can occur when their feet become encased in dung. Several different footbaths have been developed to wash and treat feet when entering or exiting the milking parlour, often the cattle are reluctant to enter these systems.
Due to a request by a local farmer, we developed a system that washes their feet in the parlour /robot, so that the cattle are mostly unaware that this is happening. Our system consists of four pressure water jets behind each cow so the water is sprayed at the back of their feet, washing off any dung, then sprayed with a chemical agent of the farmers choice, to treat/prevent the disease.
